One Day Online Workshop On Locally Manufactured Wind Turbines For Empowering Rural India

The one day online workshop entitled “Design and Development of Locally Manufactured Wind Turbines for Empowering Rural India (DWTERI-2023)” was successfully organized by CSIR – Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI), Durgapur, India, the Institute of Communications and Computer Systems (ICCS) of the Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and its Rural Electrification Research Group (RURERG) on February 24, 2023. This workshop was financially supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), India and the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program through the RE-EMPOWERED Project.

About 40 participants, mostly doctoral/graduate/undergraduate engineering students, practicing engineers from industry, faculty members in the fields of electrical/mechanical/aeronautical engineering attended this workshop. The four (4) eminent speakers covered various aspects of wind turbine systems, starting from its fundamental aspects, modeling, design, development etc. The first speaker, Dr. T. Murugan, Principal Scientist from CSIR-CMERI, Durgapur discussed about aerodynamics and structural aspects of wind turbine systems. The next speaker Mr. Jai Kumar Loganathan is an Aerospace Engineer in GE global research Bangalore. He discussed about advancements in wind turbine aerodynamics & design aspects. Prof. P.M.V Subbarao of IIT Delhi talked about design and development of drag type wind turbines for rural energy needs. Mr. Kostas Latoufis of ICCS-NTUA delivered his lecture on designing of locally manufactured small wind turbine generators using the OpenAFPM online tools, validating the performance of a generator geometry by performing a finite element analysis using FEMM etc.
