Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur

Kharagpur - 721302, West Bengal, India

The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur or IIT-KGP) is a public institution established by the government of India in
1951. It was the first of the IITs to be established and is recognised as an Institute of
National Importance by the Government of India. The institute was initially established as
part to train scientists and engineers, however, over the years, the institute’s academic
capabilities have diversified with offerings in basic sciences, management, law,
architecture, humanities, etc. IIT Kharagpur has a 8.5 square kilometres (2,100 acres)
campus and has about 22,000 residents. IIT Kharagpur has 19 academic departments, 12
multi-disciplinary centres, and 8 schools, in addition to more than 25 central research and
development units. IIT Kharagpur offers degrees as part of its undergraduate / postgraduate programmes which include B.Tech, M.Tech., M.Sc, PhD, etc. IIT Kharagpur is a member of LAOTSE, a network of universities in Europe and Asia exchanging students and senior scholars. The institute has strong bonding with the industries, and a dedicated section, STEP is established to coordinate this activity. Internationally, IIT Kharagpur was ranked 281 in the QS World University Rankings of 2020, 53 in Asia and 23 among BRICS nations. IIT Kharagpur ranked 2nd among government engineering colleges in India by India Today in 2018.

Contribution

  • Development of a hybrid microgrid system (20 kVA capacity) for the demonstration of RE-EMPOWERED objectives
  • Development of load flow controller (LFC)
  • Development of a multilevel converter based STATCOM
  • Installation of 300 kW microgrid in Ghoramara island

Relevant projects

  • Reliable and Efficient System for Community Energy Solution (RESCUES) (a collaborative project involving IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, VNIT Nagpur and DTU and three UK side institutions): In this Indo-UK project, a hybrid dc/ac microgrid is developed at 5 kW power level. A supervisory control method is used for the operation of microgrid considering uncertainty in load and generations. The on-grid and off-grid operation of the microgrid including seamless mode transition have been investigated.
  • UK-India Clean Energy Research Institute (UKICERI): The issues and challenges of large-scale renewable energy integration with the existing electrical network is investigated in this project. It includes forecasting, planning and need of energy storage system to address voltage and frequency related issues of the grid. Various topologies of power electronic converters are also investigated in this project for PV integration at higher power level complying grid codes.
  • Energy Storage Integration at High Power Level: The integration of battery and supercapacitor with utility grid using Modular Multilevel Converter is investigated in this project. The emphasis is given on modular converter topologies, efficiency improvement, mitigation of power quality related issues and development of control logic for the afore-said purpose.
  • Opened and Integrated Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle technologies for smart Indian cities: This is an industry-institute collaborative project, where a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle is first developed and then demonstrated. Starting from the motor design, its control, development of embedded platform, and other important issues have been covered in this project.
