Institute of Communication and Computer Systems
The Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) is linked to the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), the oldest and most prestigious educational institution of Greece in the field of technology. It is the research host of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). Founded in 1989, the ICCS-NTUA aims to support the performance of top-quality research, development activities and the provision of scientific service to private and public bodies. SmartRUE, a Research Group of the ICCS-NTUA, belongs to the Electric Energy Systems Laboratory (EESL) of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens NTUA. It was founded by Professor Nikos Hatziargyriou and operates under his supervision. Smart RUE has coordinated and participated in a large number of European and national R&D projects and studies. It has organized several international conferences, seminars and workshops and it has published numerous papers in international journals and conference proceedings. It maintains excellent connections with many Universities, Research Centres, Utilities and Power Industries active in the area of Smart Grids both at national and international level.
Contribution
ICCS-NTUA is the European Project Coordinator of RE-EMPOWERED and leads WP1 (Project management, coordination, and ethics requirements) and WP3 (Control and operational functions for local energy systems). It is also responsible for the development of the ecoEMS, ecoMicrogrid and ecoPlanning tools and the demonstration activities in Kythnos demo site.

- MORE MICROGRIDS (SES6-PL019864): The project“Advanced Architectures and Control Concepts for more Microgrids”, was an FP6 project (2006-2009) led by ICCS/NTUA
- WiseGRID (H2020) GA n. 731205: Within the WiseGRID project a set of solutions, technologies and business models were developed to increase the smartness, stability and security of an open, consumer-centric European energy grid.
- COMPILE (H2020) GA n. 824424: The COMPILE project aims to show the opportunities of energy islands for decarbonisation of energy supply, community building and creating environmental and socioeconomic benefits.
- Kythnos Smart Island (Greek national project): The Kythnos Smart Island (KSI) project aims to investigate and demonstrate the potential of islands to function as laboratories of smart, sustainable and innovative systems and applications, for managing their infrastructures (energy, water, waste, transportation) and natural resources.
- X-FLEX (H2020) GA n. 863927: X-FLEX proposes a set of efficient, cost-effective, integrated solutions, that will facilitate the optimum combination of decentralised flexibility assets, both on the generation (DER) side and on the demand side (V2G, power-to-heat/cold/gas, batteries, demand response).
- CROSSBOW (Project nº 773430). CROSSBOW project proposes the shared use of resources to foster cross-border management of variable renewable energies and storage units, enabling a higher penetration of clean energies whilst reducing network operational costs and improving economic benefits of RES and storage units.
- NOBEL GRID (Project nº 646184) NOBEL GRID goal was to deploy and evaluate advanced tools and ICT services for energy DSOs cooperatives and medium-size retailers, enabling active consumers’ involvement –i.e. new demand response schemas – and flexibility of the market – i.e. new business models for aggregators and ESCOs.
- SuSTAINABLE (Contract No. 308755) Smart Distribution System OperaTion for MAximizing the INtegration of RenewABLE Generation): The SuSTAINABLE project will develop and demonstrate a new operation paradigm, leveraging information from smart meters and short-term localized predictions to manage distribution systems in a more efficient and cost-effective way, enabling a large-scale deployment of variable distributed resources.
- Training course on small scale wind electric systems: ICCS in collaboration with Wind Empowerment Association and the Indian National Wind Energy Institute (NIWE) in Chennai, organized an 8-day training course on small scale wind electric systems. Website: https://rurerg.net/.
- ERIGrid 2.0: Based on the results from the ERIGrid-1 project, the successor project ERIGrid 2.0 will expand the research services and tools of European research infrastructures for validating smart energy networks with the electric power grid as the main backbone. Committed to the holistic and cyber-physical systems-based validation approach, ERIGrid 2.0 will foster system-level support and education for industrial and academic researchers in power and energy systems research and technology development.
